I’m not sure if it’s the fact that my first ever car was a K-Reg Renault Clio in sunburnt red that was missing a working speedometer, or the fact that my childhood idol spoke the words “Va Va Voom” on my TV screen, but Renault has always occupied a corner of my nostalgic heart. Fast forward a couple of decades, and I find myself in a surprisingly cloudy Malaga staring at the 2024 Car of the Year, and Renault’s biggest step in the electric space – the Scenic E-Tech Electric. I had 24 hours, and a water platform, to get my hands on Renault’s latest offering.

Stepping into the future with an electric flourish, the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric not only redefines family mobility but does so with an eye towards sustainability and innovation. This latest iteration of Renault’s storied lineage, a crown jewel among its predecessors, blends spaciousness, practicality, and cutting-edge technology with an all-electric heartbeat. The car boasts a compact yet powerful battery offering a range of up to 379 miles, housed within an aerodynamically efficient frame complete with signature lighting and large wheels that underscore its contemporary design ethos. The bottom line? It will get you, and your family, from A to B in comfort and style, and you may even have some juice left in the battery.

Inside, the Scenic E-Tech is thoughtful in engineering and design. Its Solarbay panoramic glass roof bathes the cabin in natural light, and each section can be adjusted for opacity, meaning there’s no more fighting between the adults in the front and the kids in the back. There’s plenty of other innovation too, from the ingenious rear armrest equipped with all manner of connectivity to the clever storage solutions sprinkled throughout, ensuring that every journey is as convenient as it is comfortable. The absence of leather and the use of recycled materials speak volumes of Renault’s commitment to the environment, making it a choice that feels as good as it looks.

The car’s pure electric drivetrain is not just about silent, smooth acceleration; it’s a testament to Renault’s vision for a sustainable, electrified future. 90% of its mass – including the battery – is recyclable. There are a handful of selectable driving modes that customise the cabin atmosphere, an intuitive multimedia system, and a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems. During my time in the car, everything was achieved with little stress, and the built-in Google Assistant was responsive and, well, assisted.

There are a number of trims available and the Alpine trim level was my favourite, purely for the matte paint and more aggressive styling. While it lacks the seven seats I personally need for both kids and dogs, it’s an ideal electric option for smaller families that have more straightforward needs. The 545-litre boot increases to 1,670 litres with the rear seats folded, and has plenty of room for a few suitcases or even. set of skis.

If you’re a little more sensible on trim, then you can pick up the Car of the Year 2024 from just £37,495 on the road. It’s a fantastic effort from Renault, and the Scenic E-Tech Electric is a testament to the potential of electric mobility to enhance our lives without compromising on style, comfort, or the planet.
