My trip to the Nambiti Game Reserve provided me with the opportunity to bring a touch of the Big Apple to the great African wilderness. This Manhattan Backpack in Patchwork Leather from COACH was the perfect accessory for carrying my cameras and lenses through the grassy savannah while stalking the coveted “Big Five”.

The pebble “Dark Saddle” leather is finished by hand, as is the patchwork design in suede. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it blends seamlessly into the environment (neither did my shoes) but it combines function and craftsmanship in a discreet way. Rather than shouting loudly at passers-by for attention, it is these smaller details on this bag that deserve a closer look.

Capacity is always important to me, especially as I’m carrying clothes, food, water and cameras for two on most trips. This bag is definitely big enough to pack for a day trip with a few handy pockets for separating items. My favourite feature, though, has to be the zips on the rear of the bag that allow easier access to those annoying little items that always fall to the bottom. The zips are covered by your back too, so security isn’t an issue.

Coach do very well with their bags, that goes without saying. However, what they have created here is a bag that fully demonstrates their craftmanship and attention to detail. I would highly recommend the Manhattan if you’re looking for a well-made bag for day trips in the city or even as a hardy option if you’re heading somewhere a little more adventurous. Like Nambiti. Surrounded by lions and rhinos.
