What do you get when you have colonial Spanish flair inspired by German history, deep in the heart of Filipino jungle? The Peacock Garden, a residence like no other. From the moment you drive through the palatial gated entrance, you know you are somewhere special. Deep in the heart of the Boholano jungle, this boutique hotel and spa is the perfect retreat from the nearby buzz of Tagbilaran City.
We were lucky enough to be two of just a handful of guests in this 30-room hotel and so would often find ourselves outnumbered by the very helpful staff. Our Premier Sea View Room was simply perfect. The old colonial theme was continued throughout and the view from the balcony over the infinity pool and sea was an absolute pleasure to wake up to every morning.
Mornings were spent gorging ourselves at the delicious breakfast buffet and days were spent in the sunshine, with the occasional lap in the infinity pool. Each evening, I would attempt to sample the extensive selection of whiskies at the bar and we would dine alfresco watching the sun go down. We did manage to tear ourselves away from the hotel for a quick day trip to the nearby Chocolate Hills, but more on that later.
If all that isn’t enough, the on-site Fontana Aurelia spa serves up a multitude of treatments. Whether you want some time in the jacuzzi or a revitalising body wrap, there is plenty to keep you busy within the comfort of your own hotel. The couples massage was a great way to wind down the day and it’s even better when you can stroll to dinner in a half-sleepy state (robe optional).
The Peacock Garden is simply the only place to stay in Bohol. If you’re taking the time to check out the tarsiers and local geology, then you need to take the time to find this place. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!
