Cue the James Bond theme tune. First, let me come clean and admit say that I forgot to blog about this absolute gem of a bar found in the heart of Hong Kong’s oldest hotel; The Peninsula. Modestly named ‘The Bar‘, this is an establishment that houses as many memories as it does bottles of whiskey. As we took a seat and flicked open the pages of a 007-inspired menu, we heard the tales of legendary head bartender Johnny Chung who, as well as celebrating more than 50 years of working behind the bar, recalled tales of an encounter with actor Clark Gable that gave birth to the ‘Screwdriver’ cocktail.
Each wall was adorned with art from all corners of the earth, but the cocktail list was distinctly oriental. Classic and modern options all had an Eastern twist and the flavours in my Old Fashioned (what else?) certainly packed a punch; a twelve-year old Macallan has rarely tasted so spicy. True to her tastes, the Lady opted for a cocktail containing infusions of Early Grey and a sweet cookie; an afternoon drink with a dessert-like taste. Chatting away with the bartender, you are cocooned in serenity and sophistication; a stark contrast to the chaos of Kowloon outside.
